Does anyone here have any experiences with 'soft' contactlenses? I've been wearing contacts since I was 12 (I'm virtually blind without glasses or lenses), but those are the 'hard' variaty.

Since I'm gonna be in a theater show in half a year, the director has asked me if I could look into (pun!) getting soft contacts so my eyes will open up a bit more (With my hard lenses in, I tend to look through slightly slitted eyes).

So, are there any contactlense-wearers reading this, willing to share their experiences?

Twilight Imperium is a cool boardgame, but impossible to finish when you start at 8pm with 6 players.

I only have bad experiences with lenses.

I used to have a soft pair of lenses for LARPing, with a white iris, but I proved to be either allergic to the lens or to the fluid.

Nearly got a nasty eye infection, but I stopped wearing them on time.

I use soft contact lenses since I was 11. (I am also blind without glasses/lenses! )

I cannot compare them to the hard ones because I never used those, but I can say that I do look "eye slitted" specially when there's wind, as they tend to dry up a little bit and they become slightly uncomfortable.

I got new lenses here in Holland, you use them for a month and then you ditch them. You can wear them for a long time but you still have to take them off to sleep, else they get sticky and it's not a comfy feeling when you take them out.

Eh, what else would you like to know?

Soft contacts are like 50% water. They tend to be more comfortable, they stick better and since they're flexible, don't break as easily.

The downsides are that they can't be made in as many variants/types as hard contacts, and you'll have to buy a new pair every so often. There's month-lenses, week-lenses and even day-lenses.

Hard lenses are less comfortable, more fragile but in the long run a lot cheaper. I dunno about the squinting thing.

I'd suggest you ask your optometrist if you can wear soft lenses, and what kind they'd recommend.

Hi Rob,
I've been wearing soft contact lenses for over 7 years now. I haven't had any problems with them (although I have no basis for comparison either). I can open my eyes just fine with the lenses in, no more or less than if I am wearing my glasses. The only thing I find is that my eyes are sensitive to sunlight - when the sun is not even that bright, and others have no problems keeping their eyes open, I find that I can't keep my eyes open properly unless I am wearing sunglasses. Other than that, they're grrrrrreat :)
