About the 'big' issue

Seems that yesterday's post caused a little stir. Let me clarify a little.

I didn't take action solely based on calculations and scores, though I admit that the label 'obese' upset me a little. No, it's because of how I feel these days. It's like I'm carrying a backpack filled with bricks strapped to my front. When I sit in my car, when I sit behind my desk, there's this big lump in the way. It physically bothers me. When standing up I used to be able to 'suck it up', hold my breath and make 'teh belly' look less imposing. Nowadays I can only manage that for two minutes before it goes all 'floomp' again. I got a tailored suit 5 months ago. I wore it two weeks ago and now it's too tight on me. The straw that broke the camel's neck.

Yesterday, the moment I got home I did an intense DDR session (failed the expert course on the last song, dangit!). I'm writing down everything I eat and drink. It may sound like my weight is starting to become a little obsession, but I'd rather obsess about it now when I can still turn it around. I'm not doing this to be within general accepted limits, I'm not doing this because the government is advising us to eat healthier and work out more. I'm doing this because I don't feel good about myself, mentally and physically.

In less serious news: This CD kick so much ass. 40 hits from 40 years of BBC Radio 1 (1967-2007), all performed by today's artists. Foo Fighters doing Band On The Run. Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag by Girls Aloud (!), Hard-Fi doing Britney's Toxic (!!), Robbie Williams singing The Kinks' Lola. I <3 this CD.

I pretty much already assumed that it was because of the whole not-comfortable-in-my-body thing and not just the numbers. :)

As for weight loss, don't go all crazy and expect to lose a lot of weight in a week. It takes about 3 to 4 months to lose 10% of your weight at a healthy pace, especially if you have a slow metabolism. Keep that in mind and plan for it. The key really is consistency, not extremety. Playing DDR 15 hours per week and only eating carrots isn't going to work - you need to adapt your lifestyle to start losing weight, and then adapt your lifestyle so that the weight stays off. Don't set your goals too high, either - research has shown that people best performed at weight loss if they aimed at 10% loss goals.

Writing down everything you eat and drink is good, because it helps you be more aware of what you eat in the first place. However, I can strongly advise counting calories - because that is how you know WHICH food is causing the most damage. If you see you ate something that cost you a lot of calories and didn't add much nutritional value, you know you should avoid that. See it like a daily budget you have to spend - 2500 for an adult male - and if you spend too much, you gain weight. However, if you systematically spend less (but definitely not too little!) you will lose weight. Playing DDR will improve your condition, work your leg muscles, and boost your metabolism, in addition to burning calories.

I'm sorry if I sound like a smartass. ^_^;; This is all stuff I learned the past few months and I guess I can't help but wanting to help other people achieve the same thing that I did. (Still recommending SparkPeople ;))

I tried the calory counting on spark for a few days, but I got frustrated that it's all american stuff in their database. They need to adjust to the metric system and they need to add more international foods. I don't eat Aunty May's Chocolate Chip Cake, gimme the stats for 20+ cheese!

I entered most of the Dutch foods manually. I get your frustration... all the ounces and cups drive me nuts XD

I think there's actually an option for sharing your own entered foods with others - want me to look into it? Then you'll at least have some more Dutch foods available (although I don't eat 20+ cheese. ;))

Alternatively, you could simply use a Dutch calorie counting site, there are plenty, and these have a full list of all the Dutch food :3

If you can tolerate all the weight-obsessed women on www.valtaf.nl, it's got a good system. Just a somewhat insane crowd.

I frequently use www.calorielijst.nl to find Dutch calorie values for common foods, too. With the help of that, you can make your own system. I've also heard about www.wijvallenaf.nl, but that's about it, I think.

You can also just keep track of them on paper or on your own excel sheet. Review SparkPeople's calculations for how much calories you should get per day to lose your desired weight and work with that.
